Let Them Eat Cake 2020

In this work, I screen print an image of Marie Antoinette onto a cake, paired with the infamous phrase, "Let them eat cake." This piece serves as a commentary on historical narratives of indulgence and detachment, while also exploring the intersection of traditional screen printing with edible surfaces. Using cake as the medium marks a step forward in my experimentation with screen printing, pushing the boundaries of where art can exist. The image of Marie Antoinette and the phrase below her evoke questions about privilege, luxury, and consumption—both literally and figuratively. By printing directly onto a cake, an object often associated with celebration and excess, I engage viewers in a dialogue between the ephemeral nature of food and the enduring nature of art.
